San Nicolas Haven
After the slow down of posts over at the bizhat rott forum, I decided to make use of the internal ROTT HQ forum that was set up in December, hence marking this a new era in the community. The forum has been christened “San Nicolas Haven” in honer of a former member of the old forum that seems to have disappeared. Considering how the former two forums for rott have died, we hope to make this a final bastion of community. If you happen to be a fan of Rott, please stop by and contribute.
It can be visited here
Just to note, if you first post doesn’t show up, its because it has to be approved. Wait until your first post gets approved, then you can post without need of approval.
Yeah, been quite some time since an update has occurred, but one has finally come along. Sad to say it’s not a happy update. As you all know El Zee was working on a rather awesome Doom II mod, Return of the Triad, and has been considered a rather good successor to the original Rise of the Triad. Unfortunately, a post made over at the Zdoom forums from him shows that his hard drive crashed and he lost around a whole month’s worth of work, setting him back quite a bit.
Though it seems he still has interest in continuing it, it just might be awhile before it gets up and going again, which means you’ll have to wait for the full version for just a bit longer.
The Annual ROTT Awards (aka the Rancids)
2010 marks the first year of the Annual ROTT Awards, or the Rancids if you prefer that term. If you are familiar which Doomworlds Cacowards, then this is in a similar vain to that. The awards have been divided into three categories and are as follows:
The winner of each category will receive a special made Rise of the Triad badge, a real physical object for a reward. Anyone that has been watching the community can vote and nominate someone for each category. You can find the Awards thread here, so feel free to stop by and give your vote!
A Competition!
Per-Scan over at the ROTT editing and Modding forum has started a contest. What is the prize you might ask? why its a 3D realms business card signed by Stephen Hornback, the lead Artist for Rise of the Triad! This is a real treasure for hardcore Rise of the Triad fans. Pictures of the prize (the card) Can be found on the Contests thread on the ROTT editing and Modding forum here.
What might you have to do to win this collectors item? Its quite simple really. All you have to do is create either a Fan Picture of something ROTT related, or a Fan Fiction of ROTT. Contest ends on February 17, 2011, so get your entries in by then.
Creator of the Return of the Triad TC for Doom II has just released an update to v1.1. This version is mostly a “bug-fix” release, fixing many of the initial complaints from the fan base. el zee has also created his own frontend program for this release that even displays your IP address, making it easier to get online games going. There is one particularly special thing in this release though. el zee has painstakingly recreated the first level of the ROTT shareware for this release, and can be played by typing “-warp 30″ in the command parameter box in his frontend.
You may download v1.1 from one of these locations:
Got two updates for you ROTTers today:
New Video Walk-Through for Mike Millers episode “Mike’s Madness”
Awhile back Mike Miller, creator of the user episode “Mike’s Madness”, was talked into creating a video walk-through of him playing through his own levels. So far levels 1-5 have been uploaded on his site for your viewing pleasure, level 5 (Grand Plans Cut Short) having been uploaded just today. If you enjoy seeing people play through ROTT levels (though remember this is of his own created levels, not Dark War) then stop by http://mikemiller.net/rott/mikemad_walkthrough/ and give them a view.
Community Map File Begins
Today marks the beginning of a first in Rise of the Triad history, the first ever attempted (to my knowledge at least) community ROTT project. The official thread is located here: http://rott.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?t=366&mforum=rott . The Project leader was saddened by the fact that there was no evidence that something like this has ever been attempted before, and is attempting it now. Any people interested in ROTT mapping, or those that have never been involved in ROTT mapping before, are encouraged to join in on the project.
If you have any kind of involvement in the Rise of the Triad community, you will know that the long standing 3DR subforum for Rise of the Triad community has been the central location for all things Rise of the Triad. From new ports to user maps to game discussion. It been where the action was at for many years.
Though in 2006 a user under the name admin (though goes by many different names) created the ROTT editing and Modding Forum. This was a board with the idea of discussing and creating something that was quite rare in the Rise of the Triad world, user created content. Its not often you see a new map being created or a project being started, and this site was dedicating in trying to make that more of a common occurrence by creating a place that was dedicated to just that.
Though the site has had many problems in the past. Many did not make the journey over to it from 3DR because they preferred the long standing 3D realms official place opposed to the newly created upstart community. There was also the general assumption that splitting the community in half was a bad idea, and that everyone needed to be gathered in one area. Despite the non-enthusiastic response from the more dominant site, admin kept going and a few members joined.
Though sadly it never quite became popular, and only a few members would post every now and then, and despite admins continued and ever going optimistic view, it just never quite grew. Eventually the site fell to the side and vanished from the net. Some time later a few guys over Wolf Haven would bring up the subject that this site had gone down, and the gears would be set in motion. Over time the ROTT editing and modding forum would be reactivated and restarted again. Though this time admin would go missing.
As time went by, it seemed the site would fall into the same non active state that it had fallen into so many times before…but appearances can be deceiving. Two users by the name Per-Scan and Lawstiker would go about constantly posting, asking questions, contacting people, etc. This would result in several people joining the site and activity jumping quite a bit. Even to the point where it was far more active than it had ever been in the past. Though there would be one problem.
Admin. The man that started the whole thing would be gone and no one to contact him. This made it impossible to make any site related changes. Sadly after quite a few attempts to make contact, he could still not be found, leaving the community with one option. Getting a replacement admin to take control of the site. This is what is going on right at this moment. If there are no disagreements by this weekend the site will be under new administration and the site will be having quite a few changes in the future.
And sadly the man that made this all possible will not be here to see it.
